Re: 89 200 Turbo problems

In a message dated 97-02-16 14:53:37 EST, you write:

<< I was hoping someone may have any suggestions. My '89 200T has recently
started losing power, the turbo seems to boost normally to about 1.2 bar
after that you can hear significant blowoff by the wastegate. The engine
also seems to surge, or bog down at this point. With 115k mi. on this car
is it fair to say that the turbo is dying, or could it simply be the
wastegate. If so does anyone know the estimated repair costs for this type
of problem??? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ck for air leaks first.... this sounds like a ripped IC to t-body hose...
Ck the bottom of it for a rip... Also pull the dipstick when the car is at
idle, does it stall? If so, you have a vacuum leak somewhere, if not, ck the
3 hoses for the PCV system, specifically the bottom of the T on the valve
cover for leaking... Good luck... Turbos when they go, tend to not
develop enough boost to blow the WG open, so doubt that's your problem...
