This sure sounds like Warped Rotors...I had this happen with the first
two sets of rotors on my 87 5KCSTQ before I went IA stage 1!  And I
certainly didn't think I was doing anything particulary wrong...
=46inally I called Group 6 performance (regular advertiser in European
Car) and bought cross-drilled rotors for the front (only) about 2+
years ago =3D> No Warped Rotors! I'm running these with the dreaded
Slagmasters - and the braking is usually fine for me (I've only had
one interesting incident where I had to slow from 100+ and they didn't
stop as fast as my heart really needed them to...)

In looking for vacuum leaks to cure wandering idle and other malidies, I
found that replacing the $0.50 rubber seal in the oil cap is well worth the
cost.

As I recall, I am getting about 240 miles in the first half of the tank.   
 I haven't acutally run it past that point because the gas prices here   
suck so I fill up before hitting Illinois.  How do I adjust it for a   
correct reading?  Let me see...  Invite Scott over for a few beers...

This one has 38K MIles, Pearl, leather, cold weather, etc.
Sure is a slug for speed, but it is in perfect shape (not even door

feet from the bolt), I'd sure want the EXACT socket, not denying a 1 1/16
won't work, you can repair an audi with all SAE sockets if you really wanted
to.  The point is, if you plan on doing any of these projects again, spend
some time to outfit the toolbox with the correct toys....  None of this stuff
is really that expensive (specialty tools the exception).  That old adage:
 "Do it right the first time," pretty much guarantees a second chance to just
doing it.  Looking at that front bolt, I'm not sure I'd want to be the one
explaining to ANYONE why I had to buy a new crank cuz the bolt is hacked...
 I used to wrench just to make things work.  As I get older (and wiser to
mistakes), I find less breaks and more correct work is done with the correct
toys in thy hand.  A great excuse to pamper oneself with a 10$ socket....
 Critical components on an audi should get nothing less than proper treatment
from the doctor in you.

Quattro-philes,

I saw an 86 or 87 4KQ yesterday with "Audi" mudflaps.  They were black with
the Audi logo on them.  They looked pretty good on the Alpine White exterior
(same as mine).  I have been unable to find these beasts (dealer - obsolete,
Shokan - don't carry) and was wondering if anyone had ideas on where I could
find them.  Does someone know a more current model whose mudflaps will fit
into the 4K wheelwells without a whole lot of pain?  It's either this route,
or I pick up the ones with Yosemite Sam on them from Pep Boys.  'Cause my
car is dirty the day after I wash it.  Thanks in advance.

Last night while driving with renewed vigor and enthusiasm about my Audi   
I decided that I would really like a more comprehensive engine monitoring   
setup.  Having been spoiled by what is available in the homebuilt   
aircraft environment as for as guage packages I began looking around for   
a large mounting point, and as you all know there are no cosmetically   
nice spots.  So with my new VDO Turbo guage in hand as a size reference I   
looked around the rest of the dash.  What I would like to know is what is   
behing the dash pad that is under the turn / light stalks.  There is a 2   
inch'ish area that would be perfect for this first guage.  Thoughts?

A Dremel is a high speed rotary tool that accepts various attachments 
such as small cutting wheels, drills, grinding stones, etc.  There
is also a flexible shaft attachment you can use to get into tight
spots.  It's just the thing for cutting off rounded bolts, slicing,
dicing, etc.

Also the same for the clutch slave I think.

Yep, sharp eye!  Page 145 of the April issue.  But he's sold the yellow CQ
and is waiting to take delivery (more correctly fly down and pick up) through
Ivor at T.A.P.  something really special.  Will let you know when he gets it.
