I'd sure want the EXACT socket, not denying a 1 1/16 won't work, you can
repair an audi with all SAE sockets if you really wanted to.
FWIW, yes I believe in buying *any* correct tool you need, but when my
engine was bound up (RIP) I used a 1-1/16 socket on the crank bolt "just to
see" if I could turn that motor. Well, I was standing on a 10 foot piece of
pipe and all it did was *twist* the 4" Craftsman extension I was using 45
degrees! That particular dimension just happens to be a coincidence of
sizes.
I just took the head off the carcass BTW to hang onto it, before ditching
the cast iron... There was a NUT in the fourth cylinder! wonder how long
that's been there? Looked like the valve cover size. And the carbon (?)
build up! 1/8" thick on all the piston faces! Is that normal? That engine
was using a quart of syntec every 3-400 miles though. Although the crank
would turn through 359 degrees, the #2 piston wouldn't quite go to TDC.
There was some scarring on the cylinder wall at the top - must have been
what the piston did when it encountered that uncompressible water.
regarding commonly used tools, I have a sheet of paper for my truck and my
car, taped to the tool box lid, where I write down all the tools sizes I
think I will want to grab in a hurry. Oil and tune up stuff, seat bolts,
etc. The kind of thing where you might want to run out in the dark/cold
with the right tool in hand already. Having a Web site dedicated to such a
listing would indeed be handy!! One could print it and tape it to the tool
box.. Choosing what to actually carry is difficult though. I carry my AAA
card.
