Seeking purchase advice on '91 80
Hi,
I'm an complete Audi newbie that's looking very closely at a '91 80 with
only 50K miles (engine:2.3L 5). As options it has auto, air, manual
sunroof. It also has power windows, locks and mirrors. We're converging on
a selling price of ~$9K, which isn't out of line per Kelley and Edmunds
(with the low mileage credit), but it doesn't seem to be a steal. It's a
private sale so I can't get a warranty.
The car seems in good shape. Only noticeable flaws while driving was a
very slight vibration when braking hard (rotors a bit warped?). The car
also seemed to drift or pull a bit to the right on city streets, but
didn't on the freeway (probably just the city road pitch?).
A review of service records shows seller's major cost was to replace a $713
engine vacuum pump. Other replacements included front pads & rotors and
valve cover & gasket. All done under warranty at various times over last
2 yrs. A very recent report from the quick-lube shop noted low brake fluid,
but later, the dealer service dept only topped off the brake reservoir. At
one time there was also mention of "water pump seepage", but no record of
repair.
I didn't see much on this kind of car in the archives.
Is the maintenance record a sign of big trouble ahead? How reliable is the
tranny? What else should I look for? How much trouble is this particular
model? Is $9K a reasonable price?
Thanks very much in advance...
