Would this also be called a "peg spanner"? The Haynes manual says you
can remove the strut that way, which I didn't understand because of
the terminology.

Whoa kids, a couple of things to think about.... 1) the allen wrench for the
struts is 7mm.... 2) When pulling old struts, don't bother with the allen, 9
times out of 10 you will destroy either the allen (just a bummer) or round
the hole in the strut.
IF you are NOT reinstalling same struts:
* Take those Vice Grips (AT1), lock them on the shaft of the strut, and use
a 22mm socket (frt) or 19mm (rr).... For install of new, You don't need any
fancy stuff, since the torque spec is <50ft/lbs, the allen has barely got any
stress on it....
