'86 Coupe GT bearings R?/R?
Helloooo evvverriiboddie,
I had my tires balanced - took care of the major vibrations that
occurred at high speeds(75 MPH and up). They were way off - had to STACK
1/4 ounce weights on top of each other on one wheel! I think that has
more to do with the poor shape of the rubber though than the shape(or
lack of) of the rim. Now I can attain speeds(test) of 90 MPH with out
breakin' up(before I couldn't hit 80). Definitely need new rubber -
thought I would have Blizzaks by now but I'm estatic I've held off. It
is spring time up here in New England and it's only February!
More importantly though is the fact that my front bearings are the
culprit of some serious howling and some slight/high frequency vibration
at speed. The right is far worse than the left, but I should prolly do
both, no? I can get bearings for around $30-$40, right? What I need to
know is:
1)what do I need for tools? Not too many if I'm right. I think a
socket(I need the proper size if possible so I don't find I do not have
it after I have the wheel off)to remove the caliper. A phillips to get
the rotor off. After that I'm not sure. Maybe a hammer or plummer? grips
to get the cap off? I think I need to remove the axle. That requires hex
or allem or ? What size?
2)how do I get the bearings out? Punch w/ something or do they slide
out?
2)what do I clean/lubricate with?
3)anything else(prolly!)?
The L.F. bearing was last done on 7-20-96 for $103.60 total($51
bearing/$50 labor +tax). Should I do the right side myself or for the
100 bucks, pay my mechanic again? If I decide to do it myself, I have
never BT, never DT, so some advice is in order for sure. I'll take
anything and everything! TIA!
