Subject:	Mysterious 4kS noises & problems

I own an '87 4kS with 80,000 hard fought city miles, and it recently
     started making some odd noises.

[Jon:] snip

Finally, I had to replace a failed timing belt recently--I foolishly
assumed that my (very expensive) 60k mile service included a
replacement; guess I was wrong. Since the replacement, there has been
a slight but noticeable lag in acceleration from a stop, at least til
the engine warms up. Is my engine damaged? How do i tell?
everything else seems to be OK.

[Jon:] Don't think this particular to Audi. I had an 88 Jetta that I replaced the timing belt on and power was sapped from the engine. The problem was, the first trip I took after having done this was an 1800 highway run so I didn't notice the lack of pickup until I was city driving again. Turns out they had messed up the timing very badly when they installed the new belt. Took it to a competent mechanic who fixed it within minutes. Ran great after.
