Re: Motoring News- no Audi content(USA listers)

Well I struggled to keep off this thread - its not Audi-related after all,
but anyway here goes ...

I am British by born and raised, but have lived in the 'States for 15 years
now. Even though (while growing up) there were a lot of American TV cop
shows on British TV and I knew that all Policemen carried guns, when I
first came here and saw it 'live' I was shocked and somewhat scared by
the proliferation of guns on the hips of Policemen & women. Even now,
after all this time, I am still very wary of being pulled over, due to this
irrational fear in the back of my mind that a mistake on my part, a twitch
or a 'wrong' look COULD result in a bullet spinning my way.

On the occasions I go back to the UK, that fear disappears. I think it is
interesting to note that it is far more common for the Englishperson-
in-the-street to look upon a Policeman as a friend and a helper than I
believe it is for an American to do the same.

People on this thread have talked about Liberty vs. Security, implying
that more power to the Police increases the latter at least. I believe
otherwise. For me, certainly, more power to the Police decreases my
feelings of security.

The two countries are certainly different. There is good and bad in both.
Just to let you know, I am not anti-US. I am here in the US now and will
probably stay here the rest of my life.
