Um, I don't mind saving a few bux, but my expectation would be that an oil
formulated for large diesel trucks might not be the best thing for my Audi
turbo powerplant. Different temperature constraints, load conditions,
contaminants, cycle time, etc...
And, of course, the prime question that comes up when people talk about
Fram filters versus OE...how much will you really save?...versus...what's
the risk you're taking by not using something specifically engineered and
manufactured for your application?
In my case, I spend about $125 per year for Mobil 1 and OE filters for my
Audi and Rover. I put about 15K/year on the Rover and 10K/year on the Audi,
changing oil at 5K intervals. I do the changes myself, and simply don't see
the economy in not buying Mobil 1 and OE filters. I've heard too many
horror stories about what people find in aftermarket filters...no check
valves for engines that need them, filter elements that dissolve in normal
use, etc. Do I really care if I'm spending $3 extra per filter? Nope.
I can't say that I have any evidence that synthetic oil helps me prolong or
extend engine life...I do know that my usage - such as cold starts in New
England weather - is what the synthetic manufacturers target.
