Greetings,

I've picked up '92 S4 with 73K, which seemed to be in excellent condition.
I'm now hearing, at infrequent intervals, a humming sound from the
transmission, which lasts a few seconds at a time. The dealer tells me
that they've heard this before in others, and that it's not a problem.

While looking at EuroCarFinder's Registry, one '92 S4 owner wrote:

Transmission replaced under warranty at 50K miles due to worn
pinion bearings. Common amoung S4's according to dealer.

Can anyone alleviate my anxiety about this?

Dave,

According to Ned, my dealer's service manager, and other 92 S4 owners, there
was a problem with the transmission's pinion bearings being "stamp-punched
together", or something like that....I would *definitely* take it back to
your Audi dealer, or where it used to be serviced (hopefully a dealer) and
bitch until they contact Audi of America, and I would also call Audi on it
too...

I know for a fact that a 1992 that I was looking at was fixed by the dealer
*after* I looked at it, as a result of a salesman driving the car stated:
"the transmission's making noises", and he had Audi get it repaired, but I
walked away, as it was a black/grey, and I wanted a black/black....but Ben
(another lister here in NJ) bought it, and is quite happy with it....
