16" on 90 coupe

Tom, you have 2 issues here.  (1) Tire width/section and (2) wheel diameter.
Your proposal, for 225/50/16s increases BOTH.  They are unlikely to fit, and 
would
drastically alter your gearing anyway.  Calculate the total circumferance to ID
gearing changes, diameter and width to determine fit.

You might go as big as 215/50 in a 15" wheel, but not on a 16".
I see no reason to second guess Audi at all, since these are the "optional"
size for a 90-series.
