Hmmm...green oil?

Yes. From the pump, from stone impact on the radiator and from
radiator corrosion.
The official way to check for leaks is to fill the system and then
pressurise it using service tool VW 1274. This is a contraption that
screws on to the header tank in place of the cap and has a sort of
bicycle pump built in - you pump away until you spot coolant squirting
out somewhere.
The "poor man's version" is to _completely_ fill the system to
within 1/2" of the top of the header tank (Audi does _NOT_ approve)
when cold and then start the engine. Audi does not approve because
the header tank cap is also a safety valve, and you're ultimately
relying on it in this procedure - if there isn't a leak AND the cap
is bad, the system could be over-stressed.
