Well the long and the short of my "QFO dump" statement is first, my ham
fisted typing technique that managed to hit the "Q" rather than the "U"
and second, I have located a performance shop that is fabricating some
real brakes for my UFOed '91 200q. I originally had thought that I had
something going with STEADIRIC on this project but I believe he is just
too busy with his shooting schedule to accommodate my desired schedule.
Anyway, via Igor at TAP, I was put in contact with Terry Gosse at KVR
Performance located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. They do TAP's 330 mm
brake systems and apparently a lot of other competition brake work on an
international level. Turns out that Terry, besides knowing an awful lot
about brakes, also knows bunches about Quattros. He had not developed a
kit for the UFO braked cars and was interested in establishing a working
relationship with a customer who could supply dimensions and run an
evaluation on such a system. I said "lets go!". I am about to receive
a package of prototype pieces which I will trial fit and establish final
component configurations.
The system will use 12" diameter vented slotted competition rotors that
will be about 1 1/4" thick and will utilize separate bolt on hat
pieces. The calipers will be "AP"s and will be of the four non-equal
sized piston type to promote uniform pad wear. I'm sure before its all
done, I will have changed out the fixed proportioning valve to something
that I can tweak to optimize the braking system. This probably seems
extreme to some qd readers, but I so liked the car that I felt it was
worth it. I don't know what Terry intends to sell the developed UFO
system for, but I do know that TAP sells the 330 mm system for $2250
US. The only draw back to this new system is that I will have to run
16" wheels. I have a set of 16" X 8" S4 wheels so that is not a
problem. I do hate parting with those pretty BBSs though and the not so
pretty UFO compatible steel wheels with Pirelli S2 studded snow tires.
They are unstoppable!
Just to add an element of complication to this program, I managed to
break my neck last Thursday night in skiing accident. The neurosurgeon
said that I came about as close to being another Christopher Reeves as
he would care to see. So I am guessing that some of my original
schedule dates are going to slip. At least I'm not typing this with a
pencil clenched between my teeth. I will keep you abreast with future
developments.
