RE:89 200 clutch failure noises?

Bill,
Sounds like your throw out bearing is going bad. If the grinding sound
happens when the ckutch pedal is depresses.

I just did my clutch on an 87 5KTQ with basic tools and Mitchell manual
for reference. I think the Bently manuals give more detail. The only
special tool is the star driver needed to get the drive shafts
disconnected from the trans. I bought one from Car Quest for $6.

It took me about 18 hours total (not counting time to take the flywheel
to be re-surfaced). The labor flat rate for my car was 8-9 hours at
approx. $50/hr ($450 - ouch). I had the time so I decided to do it
myself.

I bought a clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing
from Ned Ritchie for $350. After I had installed it I later found out I
could have got one from Audi Only (Pete) for $250 - oh well.

My neighbor helped install trans. - much easier with two people.

The pilot bearing was a real b**ch to remove. I spent about 4 of the 18
hours trying to make a puller which didn't wor. I finally ended up
chiseling and hammering it out.

If you decide to di it yourself and need some help or more pointers let
me know!!!!

P.S. I am in Littleton, from your E-mail it looks like you are in Denver
area.
