Subject: Early Coupes....

I saw today in the local wrecking yard a familiar audi face, a 1982
Coupe GT.
It had no wheels, poor thing, but looks otherwise sound (except
when the
moved it they bashed the side in below the drivers door...hackers,
all of
them..) Anyway, my first question is, does this car have the close
ratio 5
speed that the 84 quattro 4000 had? I'm guessing not. Next, the
car only
says AUDI on the back left, fuelinjection on the right (nice
effects, huh)
and coupe in the reflector. BUT no GT!!!!!! I even looked closly
at the
paint where it would be, and there was no mark. It is the original
paint (a
rosy metallic red) or a damn good paint job, so where the pre 85
cars just
coupes, no GTs? Thanks, btw, check out stuff I have for sale
including a
        coupe GT....

Kwattro,

The 82 Coupe arrived in North America in the fall of 1981. It was originally
called the GT Coupe according to the brochures of the time. It did not have
the GT designation on the trunk lid, however, until 1984. The gearbox is not
the close ratio box of later cars. It is very long legged with three
overdrive gears. 60mph could be reached easily in 2nd gear. Climbing long
grades was a chore as one often had to gear down. These cars were
surprisingly well equipped for their time with many power options, sunroof,
heated outside electric mirrors, heated seats etc. These were nice GT cars
with classic lines. Road and Track at the time descibed them as "looking
fast standing still".
