A Friend and I both bought 5000s' at about the same time.. We
both had healthy hydraulic oil leaks, and were tired of the dealer
pricing... so, we contacted MOBIL and talked to one of their product
engineers.. The Haynes book spec's a European oil as a substitute for the
Audi oil, and the Mobil engineer was able to X-reference this to a MOBIL
number.. the Mobil oil is (drumroll please!)
DTE13M
We purchased a 5-gallon pail for about $30.00, and filled-up. My friend
eventually replaced his leaking pump, and I sold the car (currently
looking for an 86-87 5KCSQ).. After replacing the fluid in my car, the
leaking remained constant.. (it was at a very slow rate).. I would have
to believe that if this fluid were bad for the system, I would have
experienced aggrevated leakage/catastrophic failure.. the Mobil engineer
stated that this fluid was designed for use in the hydraulic systems of
large boats (ie. barge) used in extreme weather conditions (arctic) and
was therefore designed for low temps..
Sorry for the length.. hope that this helps!!
