Audi 5000 doorhandles

Has anyone else out there had as much trouble with 5000 series doorhandles
as I have? My old 87 5000 TQ wagon took 3 replacement handles, and my 86 TQ
sedan has had 2, and needs a third. The linkage, made of some sort of
plastic, seems to be the problem. Is there some cheap solution to this, or
do you just grin and bear it, and shell out another $60 - $70 to the dealer?
It can't be happenstance, or bad karma - nothing like this happens to only
one person.
