Hello Ed.
I did mine the hard way a year ago (me wedging large screwdriver into teeth
on flywheel, wife standing on breaker bar). Having successfully done it, I
then went to the Audi dealer (200 yards from my house!) to find out how much
tool 2084 was. When I was told GBP 40 (USD60?), I ordered one. If it had
cost any more, I probably wouldn't have bothered, but at that price, I
figured it was worth it.
I am sure you could get it for less in the US. It will save you time and
won't damage the engine, flywheel teeth etc. Maybe you could borrow one?
I like the sound of Mike Tipton's "use one of the transmission mount bolts
inserted
into the hole in the gearbox at 9 o clock, that allows you to insert the
bolt thru one of the flywheel's five holes!", but in my case, I was dealing
with an automatic, and it didn't seem to have the hole.
Other alternatives:
Put car in gear and have assitant stand on the brakes. (I don't know if the
clutch or transmission will handle the torque)
Put length of rope down spark plug hole (I haven't tried this myself, but
there are people on this list who have done it successfully).
