The S-4 was already taken by Audi (lawsuit, no go) so they used V-40 and
S-40 for the Volvo produced in Holland (in a joint venture with Mitsubishi,
using a common platform for the Volvo and Mitsu Carisma, a car woefully
short on its name, but I digress). A year later, Volvo announced that their
model nomenclature will now follow this example (V-70 and -90 for the
wagons, S-70 and -90 for the sedans)
-Just FYI
