BTDT.  I assume you mean the light for the display goes out when you turn the
lights on.  Correct?

In that instrument cluster there are TWO bulbs for the computer display
(board computer in Bentley-ese).  One bulb is labeled Tag (day) and the other
Nacht (night).  The Nacht bulb is a lower wattage and thus dimmer bulb and
has a white base.  This is the bulb that is most likely out on your car. It
seems like the filaments get brittle and break when the instruments are
messed with. Never fails that when you replace one bulb, another goes out...
 

Oh yeah, the bulbs are about $4.50 at your friendly Audi dealer.
