1990 V8Q: driver's door key won't unlock/lock door

Anyone have this problem?  The driver's door can't be locked or unlocked
anymore from the outside with the car's key.  I can only use the front
passenger's door now.  The key moves freely in the driver's door but
doesn't move anything mechanically.  A couple of interesting points:

     *  the alarm can still be armed though,
     *  the door(s) can still be locked from the inside.  Pushing the
driver's lock knob down from the inside still locks all the other doors.
