K&N & '91 200q
Recently, a fellow '91 200q owner (sorry, forgot who) mentioned finding dust
& grit in the intake tract after running a K&N filter for awhile. Here's my
recent findings...
I installed the K&N about 1 year ago and 10k miles ago. After reading that
post, and in preparation for a trip to Whistler, I thought I'd pull the K&N
and go back to a paper filter for the trip. Fearing similar problems with
dust and grit, I checked the inside of the airbox, the outlet, and the inlet
hose to the intercooler--it all looked much the same as when I installed the
filter last year--CLEAN! yeah. looking at the K&N, it still looked
reasonably oiled and not significantly gunked up, but i still installed the
paper filter so i can go clean and re-oil the K&N. just another (contrary)
data point.
BTW, i DID notice the added restriction of the paper air filter -- it
significantly muffles the intake roar at full throttle (I have also removed
the front lower cover with intake air snorkel/sound attenuator from my airbox).
