the snorkel on the '91 200q is strictly for sound control, as it does not
move the air intake point into the box anywhere from the front of the
box--it can't, 'cause it goes INTO the INSIDE of the box, not out, down &
forward like on the CIS cars. IOW, removing the front cover/snorkel of the
airbox did not change the air intake point into the box, just made it a lot
larger.
i was a bit concerned about more heat here, too, but figured that any heat
that made its way to this area got into the original intake point anyway--if
Audi had been concerned about this, they would have done the original airbox
in a different way. i've increased the airbox intake area from about 6
square inches (properly noise attenuated) to about 30+ square inches (nicely
roaring). my other concern was water ingestion, but after some study, i
realize the area is well shielded from splashes.
so the question remains--how do i get colder air to that airbox? Eric has
suggested a cone filter on the end of a snorkel tube ducted down near the
oil cooler--that seems to add a water ingestion risk. also, i've never
heard of anyone selling these for the 20v turbo cars (at least the '91
200q)--anyone know differently?
