EGT temp probe for 83urq

I bought the VDO EGT, but my trusted mechanic says that the
probe is too long to fit in the exhaust manifold, and that 
Don Carr, another local urq owner, went to a local aviation
maintenance company to get a shorter one.

What did you do? What is the correct thread on the
probe so that it fits in the existing plug?

Hopefully I get this together soon, what should
I expect for temperatures? At what temp should
I start backing off the boost?
