This is interesting information because I think you now know more than
anyone else about the workings of the key-in-ignition sensor.  i.e.,
everyone else knows nothing, except that it magically makes contact
between the 30 and S terminals.  I asked the list some time ago and
got no replies.

I'd like to fix mine (currently it thinks there is never a key in the
ignition), because I want to hook up my stereo to turn on when a key
is inserted.  Since there is no "accessory" position on an Audi, and
my Blaupunkt CD player has a display which is always lit when the
"switched power" lead is energized, this would be much better behavior
than what I have now (I just pop the face when I park).

So where exactly are the contacts you're talking about?
