At the rear of the engine, on the left hand side (driver's side for US
cars), there is a timing inspection window which allows you to see the
flywheel. There are a couple of marks on the edge of the flywheel - a "0"
which identifies TDC and a "|" which identifies the correct timing for that
particular engine (new flywheels need to have the "|" engraved by the
mechanic).
These marks should be lined up to the edge of the casting in the centre of
the window - see Haynes or Bentley.
