my experience has been exactly opposite...
the OE battery (varta) in my '87 4kcsq (purchased new in 6/87) lasted until
12/92.
the OE battery (varta) in my '91 200q (deliv date 6/91) lasted until 12/96.

i replaced the '87 battery with an Audi battery (was rich then)
replaced the '91 battery with an Interstate (had to monkey a bit w/ vent
tube though)

2 pennies.
