Same sort of thing happened to me a few years ago.  I bought an Avant for 
GBP1400.  Within 2 months I had to fork out GBP1000 for a reconned diff (the 
famous disintegrating seal between diff and auto box).  The good news is 
that I only spent another GBP1000 keeping it going for the next three years 
and did over 50k miles in it.  BTW 500 of that GBP1000 was for a reconned 
auto box.  I will NEVER buy another Audi with an auto box - if I had bought 
a manual, it would only have cost me GBP500 for 50K miles instead of 
GBP2000.

If they quieten down after a few minutes that is "normal".  Try changing the 
oil.
