The V8 rides again!  Thanks to all of you that responded with ideas and
suggestions. I suspect that Ray Calvo got it right with..

<Good - the electronic brain has lost the memory of your previous
setup, and car has to be driven a few miles to let the computer
"relearn" all the settings with full feedback from all the sensors.>

...because after a few days of unfruitful diagnostic efforts, the car
started running great again on its own. BTW, Carlsen charged me a
fraction (one hour) of the time they spent looking for the problem.
