Actually Mel I know someone with a ' 91 200QW that has a Hoppen chip and
modified wastegate and uses it to tow a light trailer with a couple of
waverunners following close behind. It seems to have no problems at all with

Subject: Audi Brokers

My inability to find an Audi in my general part of the
world (California) is leading me to considering dealing
with one of that cadre of fellows that roam the US going
to auctions to buy Audis.

Anyone have experience with either of these two brokers:
Steve Krenzen or Bob Buff - or any others that they've had
luck with buying a car on spec for them? Buff in particular
makes some claims for volume volume volume so I am assuming
there must be some folks out there who have heard of him.
He says he does a lot of business through the Quattro club
magazine.

I'm looking for a '93 100s 5sp with no more that 45k for $15k-$16k.

What do I do?

I got new struts for my coupe trunk lid locally through Atlantic Imported

(made in Argentina or something), and were about $40 each.

I *think* Atlantic will do mail order, their phone number is 603-868-1161.
Tell them Huw sent you.

Also try the "real" supply houses in your area. I experienced the "chain"
type reference book/generic strut type silliness, too. Good luck.

Subject: Mt. Washington in 4KQ

I don't like to discourage people from motorsports, but I have to tell
you a sad story. I was visiting a friend in his shop to look at newly
built 4KQ converted to turbo engine with a great roll cage, fule cell and
coilover suspention. The engine in this car came from a red Quattro Coupe
that ran Susquehannock Trail Pro-rally in PA four years ago. I belive
that it was first event for this car and its driver. As far as I know the
engine was stock. There was a severe crash and the driver didn't survive.
My friend purchased the engine. I was told by many that this Coupe was
inadequatly prpared. Mt Washington autoroad is much more difficult than
any stage at STPR even in low powered car like 4KQ. All wheel drive gives
inexperienced drivers a false sence of securty. Ultimatly people crash
but at a greater speed. This can be more danderous than it seems. One of
the reasons Audi pulled out of World Rally Championship after Group B was
canceled was because there cars were very uncompetitive do to terrible
understeer, compared to other all wheel drive cars of its time. People
that rally Audi like Bruno, Rui Brasill and Frank Sprongle are very good
at controlling understeer. They alsow know how to create oversteer and
carry it through turns to their advantage. There is much knowledge that
one must aquire to run safe and with success.

They are both graded at 200 for wear; the number is not meaningful
between brands, but within the Dunlop line you can compare them, and
it tells you that they should wear about the same.

coimbra is running sendmail so unless Dan has changed the

Need an opinion on non-OEM parts.

My mech and I want to gussy up the underpinnings of the Coupe's front end.

New ball joints, tie-rod ends, and we were going to do the control arm
bushings. Well, we looked at the labor for chiselling out the old
bushings, and getting the new ones in, and decided to look to new parts
instead.

Get this: a local Audi dealership wants $234.65 *a piece* for new control
arms w/bushings. Am I insane, or is that a really serious hit?

Another local store has the Brazilian parts, and they are but $40, without
bushings. Bushings are $8, and are a heckuva lot easier to get in than
out.

Has anyone used the Brazilian aftermarket control arms (I assume they are
the later, pressed kind, haven't seen one yet).

How much quality am I sacrificing?

TIA

Hey, all.
My 84 5ks is acting weird in the braking department, again. Start up after
sitting all day, go to back up, hard pedal. No warning lamp. Let it run for a
while, brakes normal. Pump it a bunch, hard pedal again, and boost as it
settles a bit. Bomb has been replaced in the last 3 months.

Q: How do you differentiate between a sour pump and a bad bomb?

Agreed to a point ... it is good to keep one's eyes open. I actually
found a gas pressurized cylinder that looks pretty close in a machine
that KLA builds. I've got it sitting on the shelf at home right now
and since I don't need one I've never taken the time to get a catalog
from them. I'll be that if you took a few measurements you might be
able to come up with a replacement ...

I'll see if I can find the thing tonight and if so I'll post what I find
from the markings on the cylinder ...

Cheers!

Go ahead and use a cheap O2 sensor. You may lose a bit of life with sensors
of lower quality though, but basically they are all very similar internally.
Be warned though, that it must be of the heated variety and if you have to
splice wires be sure to solder them well. Resistance is a major concern
here. of course if you are a performance nut, you'd actually like just a tad
bit of resistance in the wire to fool the pooter into thinking it's seeing a
lower voltage reading therefore richening up the mixture slightly. This is
best compensated at the fuel distr. though. I've said too much already,
actually I didn't say this at all!!

Hi folks,
This afternoon I cruised down to Pep Boys and bought some of that Gunk
Valve
treatment. I popped it in and drove around for a while, then had my oil
changed. At the shop, I noticed a treatment they offered to remove deposits
and sludge from the engine, so I had that done as well. Due to the ridiculous
rate they charge for syn. I went for the regular dino.
I noticed that the lifter noise seemed reduced by quite a bit. I'll have
to
play a bit more and see if those additives/treatments really did anything
about
it. I had hoped that it would dissappear entirely but that was not the case.
Perhaps if I continue the regimen for a few oil changes I'll see an
improvement.

BTW:

First Sears and now Quick-Lube. I'm really trying to anger the Audi gods.
Beware of oil-change shops. What complete monkey-lads! This is the last
time (I've vowed) that I'll take my car into that place for an oil change.
The guy calls me over and starts going over their bogus maintaince report.
He says,

Him: "Well we couldn't check the transmission fluid on this car because
it doesn't use it."

Me: "What transmission fluid? Do you mean the differential fluid level?"

Him:"Some cars use transmission fluid, others use differential fluid.
Your car is front wheel drive and THERFORE doesn't have a differential."

[Jaw drop and big dumb look]

Me: "Um.. no, this car is all wheel drive and has two differentials."

[I couldn't believe that he didn't think I knew what type of drivetrain my
OWN
car had.]

Him: "Sir, your car is front wheel drive and therefore doesn't have a
      differential."

Me: "Okay.. this car is ALL-WHEEL DRIVE, it has two diffentials. One in the
front and one in the rear. It also has a place to check BOTH of them.
Trust me.. I don't want you to check it, it is fine. I just had it
changed
     a little while ago."

Him: "uh.. okay. That's just what they told me.. Front wheel drive and no
      differential."

[He proceeds to talk to the guy in the "hole" about whether my car is FWD or
AWD]

I couldn't believe the moron. What the heck does FWD have to do with the
differential fluid? Last time I was there.. they told me that the bolts were
on
too tight and they couldn't get them off to check the fluid.

Next time.. I'll do it myself (unless it's 20 below, then I'll take the time
to
bring it to my mechanic.) Sheesh! What the heck was I thinking. I *hate*
having to pace the "waiting room" like an expectant father. And I thought my
