Bad starter

Quattro-philes,

I've been having trouble getting the 4K start lately.  I get a nice loud
click from the solenoid, but it will not fire, altough sometimes it does.
This morning I had to jump start the car.  The car is currently under the
wrench at the mechanics and I am sure the diagnosis will be a bad starter.
How much does a recon. starter cost on one of these beasts?
Someone once told me that you can get past the dead spot on a starter by
putting the car in gear and rocking it back and forth.  Is this true, and if
so why didn't it work for me this morning?
