RE: Audi 86 CGT Horn

In a note dated 3/24/97 you write:

<<After owning this car for 10+ years....why is it I just figured out you can
activate the horn by pressing in on the steering wheel itself....not just the
Audi rings in the middle??? Is this by design??? Listmembers?>>

Huh??? There ain't much there to press on except the center "horn pad"
portion of the wheel. Yes, pressing anywhere on the horn pad will sound the
horn (like most cars I have ever seen). The wheel itself??? No. Not unless
the steering column itself is so loose that you make contact with the horn
switch by pressing the whole wheel back. I have now lived behind 6 of these
four-ring steering wheels over the past 10 years (including that of an '86
CGT...though they are all the same in pre-airbag years) and can't imagine
that pressing just the wheel itself would ever sound the horn. How did you
"kill the mouse" 'er fix the squeek? Did you remove the wheel or just squirt
stuff in there? I'm guessing that if the wheel came off, and something didn't
go back together correctly and that would explain this. Is this truly a
"feature" and I'm nuts??? Since I rode my bicycle to work today, I can't wait
to get home and check this out further. I'm confused...
