More consideration leads me to suggest something pretty nasty - oval bores.
Is this perhaps an engine that's regularly been driven hard when cold?
I5 pistons are actually oval when cold - heavy wear at this point results in
oval bores that leak no oil when the engine is cold, but leak progressively
more when the engine warms up and the pistons become round. The high usage (1
pint per 1,000 miles) suggests the same thing - an engine that's been abused
when cold.
If this is the case, then the solution is expensive - tear-down and rebore for
oversize pistons. The question of oversize piston availability then comes into
play - there are none (_NONE_!) available for the MB engine, for instance.
If this is indeed the reason - what else might need doing? The crankshaft
journals?
