Try and get an engine losing a quart every 1,000 miles through _any_
western country's emission tests. Audi's statement is designed to
reduce the number of warranty claims - if they told the truth then
every idiot who didn't run their engine in properly or thrashed it
when it was cold would claim for a replacement engine.

Although they can tell if an engine has been maltreated, it's an
expensive process that they want to avoid if possible.
