5000 A/C Retro Questions

Got a few questions for anyone out there with a spare moment...

My 1986 5000S is in dire need of an A/C compressor... As soon as the
paramedics revived after I passed out when I discovered the dealer wanted 700
bucks for a new unit, I began to think about retrofitting an earlier style GM
A6 compressor into the car.  Are there any BTDT's out there that can give me
any pointers?? I have a complete car to start from and was wondering if there
is any loss/gain of cooling performance between the Nippondenso and the A6.
Is the A6 R-134A compatible??
