re: Ti springs
It has been noted that my quotes from a 1993 Racecar Eng. article
regarding use of steel suspension springs is outdated. Insightfully
worded: "4 years in racing is like 4 Dog years........ Hell weekend to
weekend is
> an adventure in the unknow and untested in pro racing....
Hell, last year is the dark ages.........."
Anyhow, 3-8-6-4-4 (also known as Beta C) titanium has been in use as
spring material for at least 15 years. Racecar engineers are not
usually the last folks to jump on a new material. So if it was a good
idea in 1997, it would have been a good idea in 1993.
I reviewed the fatigue allowables of Beta C vs. the steels mentioned in
the article and the titanium looked very competitive, especially if it
only needs to last one race. All that I can suggest is that they really
have to get the higher modulus of steel, twice that of Ti.
