I understand that cruise control works by monitoring your speedometer. There's
some device in your instrument cluster that is either on the back of the
speedometer or on the cable or something. Maybe there's something wrong
with this piece. It's either intermittent or can't get a fix on what your
speedometer is doing. Does the speedometer needle have "bounce-itis"? In
other words, when you're putting around at low speeds, does the speedometer
needle bounce? If you have bad bounce-itis, maybe it's preventing the cruise
pickup from working right, or it's making the cruise try to compensate for
the jerky movement in the speedometer cable. The fix for bounce-itis is lubing
the speedo cable, of course.
Just thinking out loud here. When you figure it out, let us know.
