It's just possible you have a battery that went south. Worth checking
before you replace the alternator. BTW, my '90 200T had similar symptoms
and it indeed was the alternator. But mine were much more gradual - I was
able to drive the car for a long while (several days) before I had the
alternator changed. A bad alternator and a good battery would allow you to
drive for a while...OTOH, a bad battery (several cells gone) or other
electrical nasty could take you out more quickly quickly.
Let me know if you need a local mechanic recommendation.
BTW, WRT Boston snows...my Audi (un-Q) was parked in my garage over the
past few days while I was cruising around in my Rover. Seems 24" of fresh
wet is about the limit for this vehicle. Did have some fun pulling plows
out of snowbanks. What is it about a yellow blade on the front of a truck
that makes one think that bald tires and lousy technique is okay? <g>
RAC - I bought a copy of the AWD high performance book...not that I'm going
to be racing the Rover (except to the next gas station)...but I do expect
to replace the un-Q at some point with a Q!
