Some years ago, I picked up a friend making his first trip to Germany at the
Frankfurt Airport and after about a helf hour drive he said to me "Man, that
Ausfahrt must be a big town". "Ausfahrt" of course, is the German word for Exit.
The Germans, BTW don't navigate by compass points or route numbers but by
towns. To go somewhere you must know what towns you go toward. My friends
say this makes more sense because if you miss a route number you can go
forever before you discover your mistake but if you navigate by towns and
you miss a sign, there will be a sign at the next corner directing you to
the same town. Personally, I still like Nord , Sud, Ost und West.
