recall issues
In my research leading to my recent purchase of an 87 5kcstq, I came
across the following information involving several recalls from that
year's turbo and tq passenger cars:
1. System: Fuel Tank. Description: repeated topping off of fuel tank
during refueling reduces the expansion space within the tank, allegedly
allowing vapors to escape from the charcoal filter to outside rather than
being inducted into the engine. Consequence of defect is that escaping
vapors could ignite from heat emitted from the exhaust system.
Corrective action recommended was to install a redesigned filler neck and
a new vent valve and hose for charcoal filter, and to stop refueling when
pump nozzle shuts off (something I routinely do but gas attendants
don't).
2. System: Fuel. Problem allegedly is that fuel injection seals may
harden due to high temperature and alcohol in some fuels and allow fuel
to escape into the engine compartment causing fire. Corrective action
recommended was to replace seals with improved seals plus make
improvements designed to better insulate the engine against fire risk.
OK......now my car has 140k miles on it.........I'm the third owner and I
do not know whether any of these problems were diagnosed in this vehicle
and/or addressed/corrected. Has anyone had any experience with these
issues, and should I worry about it at this point?
TIA,
Mark
