It's not the amount of torque, it's the curve.  VR6 torque curve is
table-top flat -- if you're on a flat area in first gear, and let the
clutch out at idle, it won't stall.
At <2000 rpm you've got about 80% of the max torque.

The personality of the motor is just different -- not necessarily better,
just different.  On the highway, I like the Audi V6, back road storming
goes to the VR6 though.
I like 'em both, for different reasons.  
In any case, My GTI still doesn't have AWD :-(
