unequal tires

Had a pair of MXV4's for 20k miles. Lady slammed into me and it punctured
one front tire. Put a new one on and kept the old ones. When they wore
out, I replaced all four and kept the best one as a spare. Had no problems
whatsoever. Also, one time I had a flat on the freeway...with Quattro's
its really hard to tell, almost like it compensates or disguises the feel.

This raises another question for the list too; I have always been told (by
many Audi wrenches and even knowledgable tire store employees) NEVER run
tires on a quattro of unequal tread wear (size), to always replace all 4 at
once, and not to drive on the space-saver spare more than about 30 miles or
over about 35 mph. In my ten years of quattro ownership I have always
heeded
this advice, but is it really true???
