Mike,

In your 86 Coupe, you have the KE-Jetronic system, so your description
is correct.  However, in a 82 model, the K-Jetronic system's air flow
sensor should have no freeplay.

A small amount of resistance when moving the plate is normal.
There is some damping action from the fuel pressure (residual
control pressure) from the top of the plunger.
