Weight might have a big thing to do with it. The A4 1.8tq with a
manual transmission is carrying 3130 lbs. It picks up 0-60 in about
8 seconds.

In the January 1985 edition of Car & Driver they were able
to get a stock Coupe GT 5 speed with the 110hp 5 cylinder engine from
0-60 in 9.0 seconds. Without a passenger (unladen?) this car weighed
under 2500 pounds.

As for the 4000, in July 1985 Motor Trend did a comparo between a
Cadillac Cimarron, a BMW 318i and an Audi 4000S quattro. The Audi
won the comparo handily. The 0-60 times for the 115hp 5speed Audi
was 10.77 seconds (the Bimmer took 12.48). This car was
approximately 300 pounds heavier than the Coupe GT.

For those of you waiting on that comparo between the Coupe GT and
seven other coupes (the Audi won), I haven't forgotten you. I have
to get this stupid scanner working. Then I'll e-mail you a copy. I
also have the glowing review that they gave the Coupe on its featured
test drive from the January '85 issue.
