High idle and other probs.
My '87 5KTQ idles high now for some reason. And, the more and harder I d
rive it, the higher it idles. It will normaly idle between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm
but after getting off the highway, it will idle around 3000! This anoying and
is troubling me. My car also has been bucking (like it is missing a cylinder
or fuel is cuttoff or something like that) under acceleration...but this is rea
lly only evident when under 2000 rpm and accelerating. No problems and the car
drives great on the highway, but around town, it is awful! I thought these pro
blems may have been caused by a vaccuum leak and I knew one or two of my hoses
were pretty bad, so I replaced $70 worth of vaccuum hoses this weekend (all tha
t were soft) and the problem hasn't gone away!
Given this diagnosis, can anyone tell me what is wrong with my car????
Is the bucking and the high idle realted or are the seperate problems??? They
came about at around the same time though. Is it the ISV or a problem with the
idle stabilization system???? Does anyone think the bucking is a fuel delivery
problem (bad fuel pump)??? Any help or similar experiences would be helpful an
d greatly appreciated.
One more note to think about: A little over a month ago my car broke do
wn in my driveway and wold not start. Was towed to the shop and the mechanic
replaced the fuel pump relay. Car ran again (problem solved?). Then, he said
that the air to fuel mixture in my car was off (he said it was running too lean
), so he adjusted the fuel mixture and made it richer. Ever since then, the ca
r has not ran right. I asked him about it asking if it was too rich now, and h
e told me that it can't be and that all 5kTQ's run best at that setting. What
do y'all think??? Too rich, or is this not the problem (bad fuel pump theory)?
Well, any help would be great. TIA>
