Shift Knob Gear Pattern Mounting
Someone asked how the gear shift pattern was mounted to the shift
knob. Fortuitously, I discovered the secret last Friday while
examining mine (1988 90q) for refinishing.
After cleaning out the gap between the plastic pattern and the wood
knob using the extremely thin end of a chemical spatula (shim stock
might work), and prying a bit, I found that the pattern was stuck to
the wood knob using a form of double sticky tape. Pry gently like a
starfish working over an oyster, and it should yield. It is
conceivable that a suction cup or more aggressive tape would allow
pulling directly. Save the shift pattern in a location that won't get
the double sticky dirty and you should be able to reinstall it with no
problem.
