5000 truly timeless?(amusing tale)
I've liked the 5000 ever since I saw my first one- silver Turbo on the
showroom floor @ Carousel in Minneapolis, late '83. I was 8 then, but I
remember thinking just how futuristic it looked. That was quite some time
ago- Carousel had only recently taken down their DeLorean sign! Last year,
I got a near identical car to that Turbo, right down to the Pirelli P6s.
What I wasn't prepared for, buying a 9-yr-old car, were the compliments
which spew forth every time I clean it. Mine's in nice cosmetic shape for
160k+. But these people are happily misinformed; some of my favorite
quotes:
"Doesn't your car give you a lot of trouble? I thought German cars were
good?"-ex g/f as I notify her that I will be replacing the radiator.
Me:"Well, it's going to turn 10 next month, I can't complain"
ex:"(jaw drops) I thought it was at least a '93!"
"What, did your car get repo'd? I knew you couldn't afford a '96 Quattro!"
-somewhat informed friend upon seeing me on a bicycle last week
Audi's early lead in modern style keeps it ahead even 15 years later, I
guess. Remember the '80s trend of making fake 560SL mb's out of '72
450SLs? With a third brakelight and different wheels, you couldn't tell.
Makes me wonder what they'd think my 5 is if I had A6 wheels:) I can hear
it now: "Wow, how'd you get ahold of a '98?"
Just a bit of humor between synthetic oil wars and MAC-10 queries. Have a
good weekend...
Oh, and I saw a jaw-dropping urQ on the way to work this morning. Thought
there were only 2 in Tucson. The count has increase by 33%!
REGARDS,
