I have done a little research on this one, so perhaps I can help.
The turbo you speak of, is identicle to the Audi K26 in the sense that
the housing are the same and performance is going to be no different than
say a turbo from a 88' 5kcsq. The difference is in the center section and
how the oil and water lines are connected. On the Audi turbo, the oil AND
water lines are plumbed into the top of the center section. OTOH, the
turbo you would be getting has the oil lines into the top and the water
lines in the sides.
The part that I like about the 944 Turbo is that the fitting for the
water lines are threaded. Which means that I could fit it with some
Aeroquip 16x1.5 to -6 adapters and plumb it in with SS braided hose
instead of trying to get a new freeze plug in the car and finding/buying
all the factory Audi lines. Then, seeing as how the lines for oil feed and
return are the same as the UrQ's (with the exception of using O-rings
instead of gaskets) you can still use your factory UrQ lines (assuming we
are working with an UrQ here). Then all the other connections are the same
(i.e. manifold to turbo and turbo to downpipe)
IMHO though, you should seek out a turbo from an 88' Turbo S or an 89'
Turbo. They were better trubos that used the #8 hot housing. IF it were
me, I would do this swap before I would do an actual Audi turbo swap. The
Aeroqip lines and fittings are much easier for me to find and afford, so
that's why I would do it that way. That's me though, so take it however
you want.
