Yup, it's a fact- the spring in the lock is unable to return to the 'off'
position and keeps making contact, arcing itself to death. The previous
owner of my old Opel Kadett did this before I got the car, and warned me
never to put any weight on the ignition lock. I've heeded his advice ever
since- these switches usually conk out at the worst possible time in the
worst possible place.
