87 4000cs Quattro cluch stick ??

Master cylinder.

(Assuming brake fluid levels are OK)
 
Go down on your knees _IMMEDIATELY_ and give thanks for living in America.  Or 
any other country that drives on the right.  Changing a master cylinder in a 
LHD car is a snap.  In a RHD car, it's a ten-hour job.
